Firm History

Celebrating 40 Years of Innovaton, Growth and Dedication to Our Clients' Success

Becker & Poliakoff was founded in 1973 as a law firm dedicated to protecting the rights of tenants. The Firm’s growth, diversification, and expansion over the years reflect the founders' original dedication to advocating for and defending the rights of clients.

Firm founders Alan Becker and Gary Poliakoff met in law school at the University of Miami. The two soon-to-be lawyers “partnered” in study group with great success. Each went their separate way after graduation: Gary pursued a business career while Alan was elected to the Florida Legislature pursuing a political career as a State Representative. The two reunited to assist the Miami Beach Tenants Association, a group of apartment dwellers fighting for their legal rights. The rest, as they say, is history. From a two attorney office in Miami Beach representing condominium and homeowners' associations, Alan and Gary guided the Firm into new practice areas and new locations for close to forty years. In 2012, long time shareholder and member of the Firm's Management Committee, Gary Rosen, succeeded Alan Becker as Managing Shareholder. Gary Rosen had previously led the Firm's strategic planning committee and served as the Business Litigation Practice Group Chair for many years.

The Firm’s expansion throughout the state and along the east coast of the United States reflects the explosive growth that has made Florida the third largest state in the country and the strong business ties that exist between Florida, New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia. The Firm’s entry into new practice areas is a reflection of the needs and goals of our clients. Today, the Firm’s core practice areas focus on key sectors of the economy.

Along the way, the Firm's attorneys and other professionals have made important contributions to the civic, cultural, political, legal and business communities in which we live and work. Participation in local charities and industry trade groups is fundamental to our continued growth and success because such participation keeps us connected to our clients and our communities. Most important, however, is that the Firm has never deviated from its original mission of providing clients with the highest quality personalized service possible.

We are proud of our unique history and truly Floridian story. We are most excited, however, about our future as we continue to grow and diversify our practice areas and geographic mix to assist clients with new opportunities and to meet their ever-changing needs.
